Finding infant daycare in Vancouver: how to find care for a baby under 18 months
5 min read · facts checked Oct 19, 2026
Care for babies is the hardest kind to find in Metro Vancouver. Infant groups are small, staffing rules are stricter, and many families need a space at the same time, often at the end of parental leave. Here's how to give yourself the best chance.
Which programs take babies?
- Group care for under-3s (infant and toddler centres) take children from birth to 36 months, though many only take babies from 12 months or older. Always ask the youngest age they accept.
- Licensed family daycares and in-home multi-age programs can take babies alongside older children, in small groups in the provider's home.
- Multi-age centres mix ages and sometimes have a spot for a baby when an older child leaves.
Ways to widen your search
- Search near work as well as home. Many parents find a space near the office or along the commute.
- Include licensed home daycares. They're often overlooked and can have different timing.
- Ask about toddler spaces too. If your start date is near 18 months, a toddler space may come up first.
- Consider a later start. Even a month or two can move you into a different intake.
Timing your return to work
Apply as early as you can, even during pregnancy (see when to start looking). Infant groups in Metro Vancouver are usually full, so an earlier place in line often matters more than anything else.
Tip: In group care, fee reduction for infants and toddlers can be up to $900 a month for full-time care in 2026-27. See daycare costs in BC.
